SUN WATER
COLLECTOR
WATER OUT OF THE AIR
Extract water from the air with solar energy.
PROJECT SUN WATER
IN SHORT
Water scarcity is deeply related to the global climate change.
Arid zones, even deserts are expanding on all continents.
Growing food requires primarily water – a vicious circle.

The Sun Water Collector gains clean water by extracting the humidity in the air from the atmosphere. In its smallest form it produces the water for one plant, all by sheltering the plant against intense sun radiation. Thus, neither wells nor water distribution systems are needed to grow plants.
CHALLENGES
IN GETTING WATER
Large populations live in the most critical regions which are deteriorating fastest, e.g. Sahel. The increasing drought leads to constantly falling groundwater levels.
Due to the ingress of seawater into the aquifers, the water is often salty in many regions. Pumping water from deep layers and desalinating it is technically complex and expensive.
THE CONCEPT
OF THE SUN WATER COLLECTOR
The Sun Water Collector extracts the humidity in the air from the atmosphere and is typically used in its smallest form to nourish and protect individual plants.
Once the plants of the preferred permaculture system have grown and are embedded in a complex biotope, the light weight Sun Water Collector is no longer needed and can be transported to the next new plantation.
HOW TO
A STEP BY STEP DISCRIPTION
A semitransparent window transmits the required light for photosynthesis to the plants.
The window acts as a chimney and creates an upward air stream.
The water moisture in the air stream is condensed by a cooler, whose temperature falls below the dew point.
Depending on the meteorological conditions, there are several possibilities to reach the dew point temperature in the cooler:
1.) Night time radiation collector(for arid and semi arid zones).
2.) Photovoltaic driven cold compressor (for tropical zones).
3.) Thermochemical, reversible heat pump (for all climatic zones)
Functioning demonstration units of the Sun Water Collector can be found at the TTT-Center in Portugal.
